Our Story
The Film
A Tigered Calm is a feature-length narrative film that combines drama, action, and romance to tell the story of Caterina, "Cat," a hopeful, determined young social worker from New York who arrives in breathtaking Calabria, Southern Italy, to work at her cousin’s youth rehabilitation center. There, Cat meets Manuele, "Manu," a bright teen on probation for drug dealing and mafia association. She takes him under her wing, showing him alternatives to a life of crime, and begins to make an impact. Cat is also reunited with Cesare, "Ce," whom she has loved since adolescence, now the young boss of the local ‘ndrangheta, the most powerful, ruthless and impenetrable of the Italian mafias. What Cat doesn’t know is that Manu works for Ce…
The film will be shot on location in Calabria, Italy and New York. It will be in Italian, Calabrian dialect and English (with subtitles).
The Impact
We need to make this film, to tell a complex story of a woman’s love – for a place and a people, for a man, all of which she is trying to save – and to dispel the myth of the mafia as glamorous and show the reality of how both mafiosi and their victims live.
We also want to show the incomparable beauty of Calabria, a place that possesses every attribute of nature, from the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the snow-capped ski mountains of the Sila Mountain Range.
Beyond our goal of film festivals and theatrical release once the film is made, we hope this film will follow the paths of Lucia’s other three shorts: being used as a learning tool in universities and amongst cultural organizations that are interested in Women’s Studies, Italian History, Italian Language, oppression, marginalized youth, immigration, and poverty; in order to better understand what is needed to eradicate all forms of stereotypes and oppression.
What We Need & What You Get
To ensure that this film gets made, we are calling on you to help us on the grassroots level, by donating as much as you can and by helping get the word out.
Our total production budget is $2M and our indiegogo target is at least $100,000 for pre-production and development, which includes hiring a casting director who will get the script to our “dream cast,” translating the treatment and script to Italian, and getting it out to potential producers.
And if we reach our initial goal of raising at least $28,000 by April 20th - Lucia’s birthday! – we will celebrate with by inviting all donors to be exclusive guests to Lucia’s Fundraising Birthday Bash!
Part of the proceeds will go to an anti-mafia organization in Calabria that inspired some scenes in the script!
We are currently getting the script to private investors and potential co-producers and production companies, actors and directors in both the US and Italy, but we still need YOU to pass the word along to anyone you know who might be interested in the opportunity to be part of making this film happen!

A Tigered Calm (‘Na calma tigrata) è un lungometraggio, un’insieme di generi tra drama, azione, e storia di amore, che racconta di Caterina, “Cat”, un’assistente sociale newyorkese di origine calabrese che arriva in Calabria per lavorare ad un centro di riabilitazione per i giovani. Lì, Cat lavora con Manuele, un diciasettenne ai domiciliari per lo spaccio e per dilinquere di tipo associazione mafioso. Cat prende Manu sotto le propri ali, gli fa vedere alternativi alla vita criminale, e comincia ad avere un’impatto. Cat nel frattempo si riunisce con Cesare, chi ha amato sin dall’adolescenza, il quale or a è il capo della 'ndrangheta locale. Quello che Cat non sa è che Manu lavora per Cesare...
Il film si girerà interamente in location tra Calabria e New York, in italiano, dialetto calabrese e inglese, con sottotitoli.
L’impatto
Abbiamo bisogno di fare questo film, per raccontare l’amore di una donna – per un luogo e un popolo, e per un uomo – tutti i quale lei vorebbe salvare; per mostrare che il glamour delle mafie sia un’idea unicamente cinematografica e esporre come vivono veramente, sia gli appartenenti della malavita che le loro vittime.
Vogliamo anche mostrare le bellezze imparagonabili della Calabria, un posto che possiede ogni attributo di natura, dalle acque color turchese del Mar Tirreno alle montagne della Sila incappucciati di neve.
Oltre il nostro obbietivo dei festival internazionali e l’uscita nelle sale, vogliamo che questo film segue il percorso degli altri film fatti finora da Lucia: come strumenti didattici nelle università e tra le organizzazioni culturali che si interessano nelle studi della storia delle donne, storia italiana, lingua italiana, oppressione, la gioventù emarginata, immigrazione/emigrazione, e la povertà; perché si possa capire meglio il necessario per eradicare tutte le stereotipi e ogni forma di oppressione.

Per assicurare che il film sia realizzato, stiamo chiedendo il vostro aiuto –sul livello popolare – di donare quanto possibile alla nostra campagna e diffondere la notizia della campagna così gli altri possano anche farne parte.
Il nostro budget è €1.4M e il nostro obiettivo su indiegogo è di raccogliere almeno €71,000 per lo sviluppo e pre-produzione.
E se riusciamo a raccogliere almeno €20,000 entro il 20 aprile – il compleanno di Lucia – tutti i contributori che si trovano a New York saranno invitati ad una festa esclusiva.
Parte dei fondi saranno donati ad un’organizzazione anti-‘ndrangheta che ha ispirato alcune scene del film!
